With Geese Howard eliminated from the playing field, Rugal Bernstein adopts the King of Fighters namesake and orders his secretary's secretary Mature to disperse eight invitations to a select and few fighters. Claiming to be the best fighter on the face of the planet, Rugal hopes to muster up some competition from the promising crop of competitors he hopes to have attend his little tournament. Giving himself a handicap, he allows for teams of three to enter, increasing the difficulty of his task with the challenge of facing multiple foes at once time. However, should his opponents fail to defeat him, then they will suffer through a horrible fate, to be made immortalized as a stone trophy to add to Rugal's collection of reminders of past victories.
